Landmarks
I started this work with a conscious need to paint. As I had already been working with landscape, it came quite naturally to me to use the imagery I had already gathered as a basis for this new adventure – marks, textures, colours. The text represents the voices of people speaking the experiences of life in a place; all the stories that go to make up an understanding of a place as home. Familiarity and the association of people with happenings create landmarks.
The paintings are 40 cms square and are made using oils and wax on paper stained with acrylics, and mounted on board. The narratives are scratched into the paint with a nail. 30 paintings were made in all. Some of the works are shown here.
