Catchment

Why do leaves fall?

This work is a simple idea, intended to focus the viewer’s attention upwards, into the crowns of the trees. The form is of a lattice, a wire web, which is suspended between four trees. During the course of the Exhibition, Catchment will catch the falling autumn leaves from these four trees, which are all acers, Maples.

The interesting thing about this work for me is the dependence on nature to make it happen! We humans are so used to being the ones in charge, the controllers of nature. Here, however, nature has the say in whether this piece works or not. Leaves fall at certain times due to a number of environmental reasons, available water, temperature and daylight hours. See the above link.

If all conditions are met the leaves will fill the net during the exhibition. Exactly when they start falling, how many will fall, what colours they will be and so forth is entirely nature’s call. This work can only be completed through nature’s involvement.
